First Entry
Posted on: September 13, 2009
It was only a couple of weeks ago that we packed up all of our belongings and”headed home to Canada for good”. Well it was just as Ian predicted, land-based life looks a lot less attractive from land.
Today we have the pleasure of announcing that we have accepted a position as crew on our “old boat”, Yes Dear.
Behind this happiness is two men. First off my dad (sorry Ian not you, although you are great too), who is responding to dialysis and looking and feeling better than he has in the last two years. For those of you who know, my dad battles both heart disease and diabetes and most recently kidney failure. The last two years it has been very hard to be so far away from him as he has been on a steady decline in terms of his health. I was pleased to find, upon my return home that he was doing much better than I had feared. Dialysis has allowed him to be at home more than in the hospital and we now have arranged for a great nurse (and also my sister-in-law) to assist him on a daily basis with managing his medications and monitoring his health. Thank you Sue.
And the second man (sorry not you this time either Ian) is David Kibbee the owner of Yes Dear. I think it is due to my sauces, but Ian swears it is his due to his frozen concoction which David has termed, the Banana Monkey. Regardless of the reason we were honored to be offered the position as David has sailed with many great crews who are still in the business.
So….I guess that means we had better start thinking about making our plans for the 2009/2010 charter season. First stop…the BVI boat show. I tell David that I am not competitive, but man I would love to take Best in Show. With all of the maintenance and overhauling David has been coordinating on Yes Dear, it might just be within our reach.

I was looking for contact information and wasn’t able to find any! I don’t know if you would be the one to talk to or if it would even be possible, however, I was wondering if you would be looking for more crew. I’ve never crewed on a boat like this before, but it is something I have wanted to do forever. I have been sailing since I was 6. I sailed in college for UC Irvine and went to two nationals while I was there. I have also competed in two US Sailing Rolex Women’s Sailing Championships. And all I want to do now is sail and travel. I LOVE to cook and do handy work. I’m a hardworking and reliable person and I’ve been around boats my entire life.
I realize that you may not be able to do anything for me, but if you know of anyone that is looking for crew please let me know a better place to look!
Thank you so much, your new site looks great!

Hi Megan,
Although there are many days I would love a third crew, Ian and I try to do it all ourselves. There are however, many boats that do take a third crew on. Basically you need your STCW 95 which is a Marine safety course as well as your First Aid/CPR. Many Captains and Chef’s get their start through a company called The Moorings. I would say if you were interested in a Stewardess and/or Third/Fourth Crew position I would check out crewfinders.com or like websites.
Good luck,
Jody
